Coast Guard medevacs man from fishing boat near Ketchikan, Alaska

 

KETCHIKAN, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing crew member from a fishing boat northwest of Ketchikan, Monday. 

A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Ketchikan met the fishing vessel Wonderland in Clarence Strait and took aboard the male crew member who was experiencing severe abdominal pains.

The 62-year-old man was taken to Bar Harbor in Ketchikan and placed in the care of awaiting EMS at approximately 10:45 p.m.

Watchstanders at Station Ketchikan received the initial request for the medevac from the fishing boat at approximately 8:20 p.m.

"Thanks to the cooperation of the crew on the Wonderland, the EMS crew on shore and the command center watchstanders at Sector Juneau, we were able to coordinate our actions closely to ensure efficient delivery of this man to the medical care he needed," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Donald Mcleod, officer of the day at Station Ketchikan.

Conditions at the time of the medevac included 2-foot seas, 5 mph winds and visibility of about 6 miles.
