MEDIA ADVISORY: Coast Guard Academy welcomes Class of 2023

New London, Conn — The U.S. Coast Guard Academy invites media to attend the Coast Guard Academy’s Day One, Monday, July 1, 2019.

Day One marks the traditional start of Swab Summer, an intense eight-week training program designed to turn civilian students into military members ready to accept the challenges that await them in their pursuit to become Coast Guard officers.

During Day One the Swabs will cycle through uniform issue, haircuts, drill practice and administration in-processing before marching onto Washington Parade Field and raising their right hand swearing an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Although the exact makeup has not been finalized, about 285 young men and women are expected to swear-in and begin training.

Five international students from the Philippines, Rwanda, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Mauritius will also join the class.

Day One Schedule (see Campus Map at https://www.uscga.edu/campus-map/):

7 - 9 a.m.                     Check in - Roland Hall (#25 on map), 5th deck.

8 - 3 p.m.                    Swabs cycle through the following training stations throughout the day.
