Coast Guard responds to report of downed aircraft on Catalina Island

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — Coast Guard search-and-rescue crews responded to a report of a downed aircraft on Catalina Island Wednesday morning.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., Coast Guard Los Angeles-Long Beach command center received a report of an overdue Bell Robinson helicopter with one person aboard in the vicinity of Catalina Island.

Watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco Forward Operating Base Point Mugu MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to begin searching.

At approximately 9:54 a.m., a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department helicopter crew located a small crash site on land northwest of Cat Harbor. Paramedics aboard the helicopter are currently on scene assessing the damage and are searching for survivors.

The aircraft was reported overdue and was flying from Torrance Municipal Airport to Catalina Island Airport.
