Coast Guard medevacs 5-year-old girl from cruise ship near Juneau

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a 5-year-old girl from a cruise ship near Juneau, Sunday.

A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Juneau met the cruise ship Ovation of the Sea in Gastineau Channel and took aboard the girl, who was experiencing abdominal pain, along with her parents. The crew took the family to the South Douglas boat ramp in Juneau where the girl was placed in the care of awaiting local EMS.

The Coast Guard received the initial request for the medevac at approximately 2:09 p.m., Sunday.

"We are thankful for the prompt response from the cruise ship as well as local EMS in Juneau," said Petty Officer 1st Class Mike Klosterman, a Station Juneau command duty officer. "This allowed us to provide a quick launch and recovery to assist this young girl and her family."

Weather at the time of the medevac included 12 mph winds, 2-foot seas, ten miles of visibility and an air temperature of 54 degrees.

The 1,138-foot Ovation of the Sea was headed from Juneau to Skagway.
