Coast Guard Station Monterey to host Safe Boating Open House

MONTEREY, Calif. — Personnel from Coast Guard Station Monterey, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Coast Guard Cutter Hawksbill, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Monterey Fire Department, California Fish and Wildlife, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and California State Parks are scheduled to hold a free, public Safe Boating Open House, Saturday. 

The event, which kicks off National Safe Boating Week, will give the public and the media the opportunity to meet local first responders and learn about boating safety through demonstrations and discussions. The event will include a rescue helicopter demonstration at 12:45 p.m., rescue boat tours, meet and greets with maritime professionals and first responders and information about boating safety, radio communications and paddle safety. 

"Coast Guard Station Monterey and our maritime partners are very excited to offer this open house as an opportunity to meet our boating public and provide safe boating education," said Lt. Cathleen Giguere, Station Monterey’s executive officer. “As always, we want to ensure that everyone has the right equipment and training to stay safe and enjoy their time on Monterey Bay.”

Coast Guard personnel will also give away free “If Found” stickers for owners to label their paddle boards or kayaks. If a paddle craft is found, the sticker provides contact information so rescuers can determine if there is an actual emergency, or if the craft is simply adrift. 

The event is free and open to the public.
