JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Capt. Mark Vlaun relieved Capt. Todd Wiemers as the commander of Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville, Tuesday during a change of command ceremony at Naval Station Mayport. 

Vlaun reported to Sector Jacksonville from Sector Miami where he held the position of deputy commander. Wiemers will transfer to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C. where he will hold the position of assistant commandant for the Reserves. 

Rear Adm. Peter J. Brown, the 7th Coast Guard District commander, presided over the ceremony.

Sector Jacksonville is comprised of more than 1,300 active-duty, reserve and civilian personnel, and more than 1300 auxiliarists. The sector has three small boat stations, five cutters, two aids to navigation teams and a marine safety detachment.

Sector Jacksonville's area of responsibility (AoR) encompasses 40,000 square miles of ocean and inland waterways. Within Sector's AoR are 190 miles of coastline stretching from King's Bay, Georgia, to Port Malabar, Florida. 

The change of command ceremony marks a transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time-honored tradition, conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries to formally demonstrate the continuity of the authority within a command.
