MIAMI — Capt. Jo-ann Burdian relieved Capt. Megan Dean as the commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, Friday during a change-of-command ceremony at Coast Guard Base Miami Beach. 

Burdian reported to Sector Miami from Sector Puget Sound in Seattle where she was chief of response since July 2017. Dean will transfer to Coast Guard District 13's chief of staff in Seattle. 

Rear Adm. Peter J. Brown, the 7th Coast Guard District commander, presided over the event.

Sector Miami is comprised of more than 900 active-duty, reserve and civilian personnel, and more than 1300 auxiliarists. The sector has fours small boat station, 11 Fast Response Cutters and two aids to navigation team.

In the past year, sector has conducted as part of the Coast Guard Seventh District numerous search and rescue cases saving 1,055 lives. In the fourth largest port in the country, sector teams have conducted 13,689 vessel inspections.

The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored tradition. It represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another. The event ensures the continuity of leadership and operations within the sector's area of responsibility.
