SUBJ: U. S. COAST GUARD CORE VALUES – SILVER ANNIVERSARY
1. On 19 April 1994, 25 years ago this month, Admiral J. W. Kime, our 19th Commandant,
sent out a message promulgating our core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.
2. In the last quarter century we’ve seen these core values integrated into every part
of our organizational culture, and they serve as enduring anchor points for our service in
a changing world. Integrity remains our standard. We treat each other with fairness, dignity,
and compassion. We seek responsibility, accept accountability, and serve with pride. These
words are taken directly from the original core values message, and remain true today.
3. Core values are a deep part of the heritage that make our organization great, and pull
forward 228 years of history and organizational ethos. They articulate who we are and guide
our performance, conduct, and decisions every minute of every day.
Because we each represent the Coast Guard to the public, we must all embrace these core
values in our professional and personal lives. Respect sets the condition for us to retain
an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the American public we serve.
4. The core values were the result of work started by Admiral James Loy, our 21st commandant,
when he was a brand new flag officer, and sought to develop a fully integrated USCG leadership
program. These core values, as important as they are in guiding our lives, also reflect the
power of vision, and the progress that can be made when we think big, build and empower
inclusive and diverse teams, and thoughtfully implement the right ideas.
