Coast Guard medevacs woman after vessel strikes sandbar

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 55-year-old woman Sunday after the vessel she was on struck a sandbar in Five Fathom Creek near McClellanville.

At 8:44 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center watchstanders received a notification from Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch of a 16-foot skiff, which hit a sandbar with three people aboard, with two female passengers being ejected.

One female passenger, who suffered a lower back injury and a facial injury, was taken to the McClellanville boat landing by a good Samaritan and the 55-year-old female passenger suffered a back injury with trouble breathing. The operator of the vessel suffered no injuries.

An Air Facility Charleston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an Awendaw Fire Department airboat, with a medic aboard, launched to assist.

The Awendaw Fire Department arrived on scene and placed the woman on a backboard. Shortly after, the Dolphin crew hoisted the woman and medic and transported them to the Medical University of South Carolina.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
