Coast Guard 5th District recognizes Enlisted Person of the Year

FORT MACON, NC ¾ Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Montgomery, a boatswain's mate aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Maple, received the 5th District’s Enlisted Person of the Year honors during a ceremony at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Apr. 12, 2019.
Montgomery managed over $1 million in contracts for his cutter, managed and qualified boat crews and watchstanders aboard the Maple, mentored a Coast Guard recruit company at Cape May, New Jersey, and deployed to the Coast Guard Cutter Walnut to train its crew. He also volunteered over 20 hours of personal time to clean up neighborhoods after Hurricane Florence and assisted two displaced shipmates find temporary homes.
He received a Coast Guard Commendation Medal from Rear Adm. Keith Smith, commander of the Coast Guard’s 5th District, for his outstanding service.
Each year, the Coast Guard selects an enlisted service member from its active duty workforce for this recognition. The honoree epitomizes a spirit of pride, professionalism and dedication, and he or she embodies the Coast Guard Core Values of honor, respect and devotion to duty.
