SUBJ: DEATH OF A RETIRED FLAG OFFICER

1. It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Rear Admiral
Thomas W. Jones, USCG (retired), who passed away on Saturday, 30 March 2019 in
Vienna, VA at the age of 58.
2. By order of the Commandant and IAW REF (A), the National Ensign shall be flown
at half mast on all Coast Guard buildings, grounds, and vessels not underway from
sunrise until sunset on Saturday, 06 April 2019, in honor of RADM Jones.
3. Born on 20 December 1960 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he graduated from the
University of Maryland - College Park in 1983 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Following completion of Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned into the U.S.
Coast Guard in May 1984.
4. Prior to flag rank, he served as Chief, Office of Civil Engineering and Chief,
Office of Budget and Programs, where he served as the principle resource advisor
to the Commandant. His field assignments include Commanding Officer, Research &
Development Center; Commanding Officer, Civil Engineering Unit Providence;
Facilities Engineering Officer, Integrated Support Command Portsmouth; Civil
Engineer and Industrial Manager, Greater Antilles Section; and tours afloat in
USCGCs TANEY and INGHAM.
5. Promoted to Rear Admiral in May 2012, he served as Director of Enterprise
Strategy, Management and Doctrine from 2012 - 13; Director of Operational
Logistics from 2013 -15; and Coast Guard Deputy for Mission Support from 2015 - 17.
RADM Jones retired in 2017 after 33 years’ distinguished Coast Guard service.
6. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in September 2017 as Director,
Program Integration Office for CYBER-CIO-C4IT Transformation. In November 2018, he began
his most recent SES assignment as Director, Hurricane Reconstitution Program, where he
oversaw progress related to planning, engineering, and construction requirements to
support facility reconstitution from the historic 2017 hurricane season.
7. RADM Jones earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies
from the Naval War College; Master of Public Administration Degree from Old Dominion
University; and a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of
Illinois. His awards include the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, four Legion
of Merit medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, and recognition as the Coast Guard
Engineer of the Year in 2004.
8. He is survived by Pamela (Cox), his wife of 34 years, and their daughter Madison Kate;
his parents, Ken and Ruth Jones; brothers Ken and Steven and four nieces and nephews.
9. The family will hold a viewing on Friday 05 April 2019 between 1400-1600 and 1800-2000
at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday,
06 April 2019, at 1100 at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Vienna, VA. In lieu
of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Ataxia-telangiectasia Children’s Project
(www.atcp.org) or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.JDRF.org).
