KEY WEST, Fla. —The Coast Guard medevaced a 66-year-old woman who sustained a back injury after falling aboard the 26-foot research vessel, Irgo, Sunday approximately two miles south of Islamorada.

Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders received a medevac request via VHF radio channel 16 from the Irgo crew at approximately 3:30 p.m. and diverted a Coast Guard Station Islamorada 33-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement boatcrew who arrived on scene and transferred the woman to awaiting emergency medical services at Station Islamorada.

"Thanks to the Irgo crew's possession and usage of a VHF radio, we were able to get to the scene and assist within five minutes of receiving the call," said Petty Officer 1st Class Richard Steidell, operations petty officer at Station Islamorada. "Having the proper safety and communications equipment can play a major factor in the success of our missions."
