SUBJ: 2019 BLACK ENGINEER OF THE YEAR (BEYA) AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM)
1. The 33rd annual Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitive Conference took place from 7-9 February 2019 in
Washington, D.C. The Conference brought together thousands of STEM professionals from across
the nation, with events honoring the contributions and achievements of African American Admirals,
Generals, members of the Senior Executive Service, and high performing military personnel.
2. This year the USCG was honored as the featured service during the 14th annual BEYA Stars &
Stripes Military Awards Dinner, which took place on 8 February 2019. The event was attended by
more than 1,200 attendees, including top military and prominent industry leaders. Admiral Schultz
was the keynote speaker. The dinner’s theme was “Ready, Relevant, Responsive: Achieving Mission
Excellence Anytime, Anywhere.” Prior to the dinner, the USCG kicked-off the 8th Annual Stars
and Stripes Youth/Flag Mentoring Session, consisting of over 160 active duty Flag Officers and
Senior Executive Service (SES) professionals, engaging and impacting the lives of more than 500
underrepresented high school students toward careers in STEM.
3. The BEYA 2019 USCG award recipients for excellence and leadership were:
    a. RADM Erica Schwartz (CG-11), Service Military Award
    b. SES, Mr. Albert Curry, Jr. (CG-4D), Senior Executive Service Award
    c. BMC Malia Chasteen (OIC, USCGC Tackle), Senior Enlisted Award Winner
    d. CDR Royce James, Ph.D. (USCGA), Professional Achievement Award
    e. LT Allice Gholson, (Asset Line Manager CEU Providence), Modern-Day Technology Award
    f. 1/c Cadet Nicholas Woolfolk, BEYA Student Community Award
   g. 2/c Cadet Angelou Dunton, BEYA Student Athlete Award
   h. 3/c Cadet Maylis Yepez, BEYA Student Military Leadership Award
    i. USCG Officer Trainee Camarie Rogers, (CSPI Student; Hampton University), GEM Student
Leadership Award
4. Congratulations to all the award winners and a special thanks to the USCG Band, Silent Drill
Team, volunteers, and conference participants who, on short notice after the government reopened
following a 35-day shutdown, made this event a tremendous success through their participation
and support.
