PHILADELPHIA – Members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Atlantic City will honor five Coast Guard members who died 87-years ago during an attempted rescue off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, at the Absecon Lighthouse, at 10 a.m. on March 6, 2019.

The wreath laying will commemorate the members of Coast Guard Lifeboat Station Atlantic City who launched to assist the fishing boat Anna during a nor’easter on March 6, 1932.

Crewmembers launched a motorized picket boat to assist the Anna, and were capsized by heavy surf off Steel Pier, which lead to the death of two out of three crewmembers.

A second lifeboat carrying three crewmembers was launched to aid the capsized crew, and was lost at sea due to severe weather.

Coast Guard members at the memorial will read an account of the events of March 6, 1932, hold a prayer and lay a wreath in remembrance.

Attending media are requested to arrive 10 minutes prior to the event start.
