Coast Guard aircrew rescues man stranded near Drain, Ore.

 

NORTH BEND, Ore. — The Coast Guard rescued a 73-old man stranded atop a forest hill near Drain, Wednesday afternoon, after a recent snow storm in the area blocked road and supply access.

 

A Coast Guard aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Sector North Bend hoisted the man to safety and transported him to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene where he received medical care related to the treatment of hypothermia.

 

Watchstanders in the Sector North Bend command center were contacted by personnel from the Oregon Office of Emergency Management at 1:20 p.m. to request an air rescue of the stranded man. The man was reportedly staying at logging site looking after equipment when a snowstorm hit the area. After several days of surviving on the on-hand supplies, the man ran out of propane for heating the logging trailer and other survival supplies were dwindling so he called 9-1-1 dispatch. With ground access blocked due to road conditions and another winter weather advisory in affect OEM organized rescue efforts.

 

The Coast Guard aircrew arrived on scene at 2:17 p.m. and dropped the man off at the hospital at 3:05 p.m.

 

The condition of the man is unknown at this time.
