Coast Guard responds to vessel collision with 4 people in the water  

 

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard responded to a report of four people in the water after two vessels collided near Baptiste Collette Bayou, Louisiana, Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a notification at 10:45 a.m. of a vessel collision between a 40-foot commercial deck boat with eight people aboard and a 24-foot bay boat with four people aboard. All four people from the bay boat were ejected into the water. The crew of the commercial deck boat threw the people in the water life jackets and brought them aboard the commercial deck boat.

Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Venice 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew who arrived on scene at 11:05 a.m. The boatcrew received the four individuals from the deck boat and transferred them to Station Venice where they were then transported to Ochsner Medical Center in Terrytown, Louisiana.

The bay boat is half sunken in Baptiste Collete Bayou outside the channel awaiting salvage.

“The Coast Guard reminds all mariners to always wear a life jacket when operating on the water,” said Cdr. Zachary Ford, Sector New Orleans.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
