SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Coast Guard and California State University Long Beach officials signed a memorandum of understanding for a Coast Guard scholarship program to recruit highly motivated students who demonstrate academic and leadership abilities in Long Beach Friday.

The Coast Guard Pacific Area Command implemented the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative, which allows Rear Adm. Nathan A. Moore, Coast Guard Pacific Area deputy commander, to award CSPI scholarships to applicants from their Minority Servicing Institution partner school.

If accepted, students participate in a minimum of 16 hours a month of Coast Guard activities. This includes wearing the Coast Guard uniform on campus once a week and during their four weekly hours of Coast Guard duties while receiving exposure to Coast Guard missions and units.

"The Coast Guard is excited to begin this partnership with Cal State Long Beach," said Moore. "The CSPI program gives young men and women a chance to serve their country while earning their college degree, which is beneficial for the Coast Guard, the university and the community." 

The application consists of basic personal information, a resume, personal narrative, letters of recommendation, copies of all transcripts and diplomas, test score documentation and up to five awards. Coast Guard recruiters will provide the specific programmatic checklist to aid in the assembly of the application packages based upon the applicant’s military status. CSPI is a program designed for motivated individuals who demonstrate a high caliber of academic and leadership excellence and who desire to serve their country in the United States Coast Guard. Students currently enrolled, accepted for enrollment or pending enrollment in a full-time bachelor's degree program at designated college or institution with the desire to complete college and receive a guaranteed commission as an officer in the United States Coast Guard can apply for CSPI.

A student currently pursuing an Associate of Art/Associate of Science degree at a junior college or community college who plans to continue with their Bachelor of Art/Bachelor of Science degree may be eligible for CSPI if they are accepted for enrollment at a qualifying college.
