SUBJ:  2019 STUDENT ART CONTEST SOLICITATION
1.  Students in grades K-12 across the Americas (North, Central, South) and the
Caribbean are invited to participate in the annual Student Art Contest sponsored
by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), the North American Environment Protection
Association (NAMEPA) and the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization
of American States (CIP-OAS).  The theme for this year’s contest is “All Aboard!
There’s a place for you in the maritime community!” This theme reflects the
International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2019 World Maritime Day theme.
2.  The contest theme seeks to embrace diversity and inclusion in the maritime
community while highlighting the broad range of opportunities the industry has to
offer.  The diversity of opportunities in the maritime industry offer exciting
careers that allow travel throughout the world and exposure to countless cultures.
Successful members of the marine industry can come from any educational,
geographic, or cultural background.  Students are encouraged to think of ways to
artistically represent diversity in the marine industry either on a ship or in a
shore-side role. Entries must be made online by 31 March 2019. Contest guidelines
and helpful links may be accessed on the Coast Guard Civil Rights Directorate
website at https://www.uscg.mil/Resources/Civil-Rights/Civil-Rights-Awards/.
3.  All students in the aforementioned grades, including dependents of Coast Guard
members, are eligible to participate in the art contest.  Additionally, students
living outside of the Americas and the Caribbean who have one or more parents on
active duty in the Coast Guard may also participate.
4.  Twelve finalists, six from grades K-5 and six from grades 6-12, will be chosen
from the entries.  Each finalist will be required to submit their original artwork
when notified of their selection.  The winning artwork will be retained and
featured on the USCG, NAMEPA and CIP-OAS websites as well as on a twelve-month
calendar themed, "All Aboard! There’s a place for you in the maritime community!"
The calendar will be printed in English and Spanish.
5.  All finalists will receive a certificate and a calendar.  Two grand prize
winning artists (one from each grade category) will receive a $100 cash prize along
with a Coast Guard-themed package.
6.  Coast Guard Partnership in Education Coordinators and volunteers are asked to
share this announcement with teachers and to encourage student participation at
all local schools.
