Coast Guard rescues 4 from vessel taking on water 1 mile east of Cutler Bay

MIAMI — The Coast Guard rescued four mariners Saturday from a vessel taking on water approximately 1 mile east of Cutler Bay.

A Coast Guard Station Miami Beach 45-foot Response Boat—Medium boatcrew spotted a red flare in the vicinity of Black Point while they were on patrol. The boatcrew diverted and arrived on scene with a 21-foot pleasure craft taking on water with four people aboard.

“These mariners had emergency signaling devices, like flares, which in this case helped our rescue crews locate the disabled vessel in a timely manner,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Sarah Benton, Sector Miami command duty officer. “For anyone planning on getting underway we always recommend that all mariners have emergency equipment aboard, like flares, life jackets, VHF-FM radio and an emergency position indicating radio beacon. This case highlights how being prepared with emergency equipment saved these mariners from a potential bad situation.”

The rescue crew safely brought the mariners and towed the vessel to Black Point Marina with no reported injuries.
