Coast Guard rescues stranded individual from island near Barley Point Island, N.J.

NEW YORK — Coast Guard crews rescued a distressed individual stuck on an unnamed island west of Barley Island, Monday morning.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook received notification from Rumson Police Department of a 21 year-old-man stuck on an island west of Barley Island in the Navesink River after his small boat broke down.

A Station Sandy Hook boatcrew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small launched and arrived on scene at 10:15 a.m. Two boatcrew members waded through shallow water and safely brought the man aboard the Coast Guard boat. 

The man had no medical concerns and was taken to awaiting emergency medical services on Barley Island. 

“Cold water and below freezing temperatures can complicate rescues like this and turn a bad situation to worse very fast,” said Cmdr. Rich Sansone, search and rescue coordinator for Coast Guard Sector New York. “Coast Guard crews are ready and standing the watch to assist and prevent cases like this from becoming worse.”

Weather on scene was 30 mile per hour winds with an air temperature of seven degrees, and water temperature of 34 degrees.

Every year the First Coast Guard District assists in saving 3,300 lives.
