SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard presented a Distinguished Public Service Award to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California Tuesday.

Rear Adm. Peter Gautier, the 11th Coast Guard District commander, presented the award to Adam Braverman for his work as the Deputy Chief of Narcotics for the Southern District of California from 2014 to 2017 and continued efforts as U.S. Attorney from 2017 to 2018.

Braverman's award was presented in recognition of his extraordinary and sustained work to combat the smuggling of illegal drugs into the U.S. and efforts to secure the nation’s maritime and coastal border region.

“Mr. Braverman, his prosecutors, investigators and staff have been outstanding partners to the Coast Guard men and women on the front lines interdicting illegal drugs on the high seas,” said Gautier. “Through Mr. Braverman’s efforts, our Coast Guard drug seizures end up in successful convictions, with smugglers brought to justice, disrupting and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. It is gratifying for the Coast Guard to see these results stemming from our efforts.”

Braverman instituted a comprehensive maritime counter-narcotics program to successfully combat smuggling in the Eastern Pacific Ocean off California, Mexico and Central America. To address a significant increase in illegal maritime drug trafficking, he mentored investigators and prosecutors in the implementation of a novel prosecution strategy that resulted in major convictions and the arrest of key landside organizers. These convictions significantly impacted the flow of maritime smuggling, delivered a major setback to a violent and prolific drug trafficking organization and helped in the dismantlement of major transnational criminal organizations operating in Colombia and Guatemala.

The Distinguished Public Service Award is the highest public recognition that the Commandant of the Coast Guard may award aside from the Gold and Silver lifesaving medals. Coast Guard Public Service Awards recognize individuals, groups, or organizations for helping the Coast Guard carry out its missions. The awards recognize the recipient’s exceptional coordination and cooperation in matters pertaining to the Coast Guard's responsibilities and their personal and direct contribution to the Coast Guard that had a direct bearing on the accomplishment of the Coast Guard's responsibilities to its citizens.
