SUBJ: PROSPECTIVE COMMANDING OFFICER FAMILIARIZATION (PCO FAM) TRAINING (500271) CHECKLIST

1. REF (A) requires all Prospective Commanding Officers and Prospective Officers in
Charge (PCOs/POICs) to complete Prospective Commanding Officer Familiarization (PCO FAM)
training (500271) prior to executing their permanent orders.
2. COMDT (CG-751) has promulgated a PCO FAM checklist to help PCOs/POICs focus on the
most important cutter readiness issues, cutter administration and command relationships
during PCO FAM training. PCOs/POICs should complete the checklist during their assigned
PCO FAM training. The PCO FAM checklist items should be signed off by the cutter’s
CO, XO or respective Subject Matter Expert (SME).
3. Due to the cutter’s schedule or circumstances, not all required PCO FAM checklist
items or evolutions may be observed or conducted. The PCO/POIC may annotate this
checklist with a “not completed” for each missed item and state the reason in the
comment section.
4. The PCO FAM checklist can be found at: http://cglink.uscg.mil/80015bc2.
5. A copy of the completed/annotated PCO FAM checklist shall be included with the
command relief letter endorsement required by Section 4-1-25 of REF (B).
6. The contents of this ACN will be incorporated into the next update of REF (A),
which will be released within the next year.
