MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit Providence hosts bridge building competition with local high school students

BOSTON — Media are invited to a bridge building competition between students from Mount Pleasant High School hosted by Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit Providence, Rhode Island.

Twenty-five students will work with Coast Guard engineers to design bridges from popsicle sticks and subsequently load test them to see which one is the strongest.

The competition is sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) local Narragansett Bay Post. The event has become an annual tradition spanning over a decade. The students who will be building the bridges are also part of a pre-engineering cohort at MPHS.

The purpose of the annual bridge building competition is to promote the study and application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fundamentals through the Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education Program and help local school students develop hands-on learning through bridge construction and testing.
