SUBJ: 243RD BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
1. Happy Birthday and congratulations to the United States Marine Corps for 243 years
of exceptional service to our Nation.
2. Formed by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on 10 November 1775, the
Marine Corps has forged an impeccable reputation as a Service that is highest in military
efficiency and soldierly virtue. Whether rendering humanitarian assistance or fighting
wars abroad, Marines consistently uphold their Service reputation of "No better friend,
no worse enemy."
3. This year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood, a
significant event in military history that not only turned the tide of World War I, but
contributed greatly to the lore of the United States Marine Corps. That legacy continues
today with combat deployments for Operation Inherent Resolve and military support to
natural disasters.
4. The United States Coast Guard takes immense pride in serving alongside our fellow
Service to defend our republic from direct and indirect threats both at home and abroad.
On behalf of the 42,000 men and women of the Coast Guard, Happy 243rd Birthday and Semper Fi!
5. Admiral Karl L. Schultz, Commandant, sends.
