SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard Sector San Francisco commander is scheduled to officially recognize the crew of the commercial fishing vessel Smith Brothers #2 during an award presentation on Yerba Buena Island, Tuesday.
Coast Guard Capt. Tony Ceraolo will recognize the crew of Smith Brothers #2 for rescuing the four-person crew of the fishing vessel Ocean Gale last November, after the Ocean Gale caught fire and the crew was forced to abandon ship.
The Smith Brothers #2 crew was fishing near Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay when they heard a Coast Guard broadcast asking available mariners to assist the Ocean Gale crew.
They diverted to the scene, where the Ocean Gale was engulfed in flames. The crew had abandoned ship on the vessel's life raft. The Smith Brothers #2 crew retrieved the fishermen and took them to shore in Half Moon Bay.
The two crews are scheduled to reunite at the ceremony.
"We are truly proud to be part of the maritime community with crews like the Smith Brothers #2, who watch out for their fellow fishermen and answer the call," said Ceraolo. "Our crews can't be everywhere at once, so it really augments our coverage when we can count on skilled, brave mariners like these when the time comes."
