Coast Guard responds to explosion on Terminal Island
SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Coast Guard responded to a shipping container explosion on Terminal Island Tuesday evening.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach watchstanders received a report of a shipping container explosion at the Evergreen Terminal under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The container was loaded with scrap metal intended to be exported out of the country.
The Evergreen Terminal has been evacuated. All other terminals remain open. The explosion is believed to be an industrial accident. Officials are investigating 10 additional shipping containers believed to be carrying the same material.
The Coast Guard is responding alongside the Los Angeles Port Police, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department and Customs and Border Protection.
There were no reports of any injuries.
