Coast Guard, Kauai Fire, Ocean Safety searching for suspected missing person off Kauai
HONOLULU — The Coast Guard, Kauai Fire, and Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services crews are searching for Terry Lilley, 64, off of the north shore of Kauai, Tuesday.
"The kayak was found offshore and determined to be Lilley's," said Sam Gardner, a search and rescue controller with Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. "The fire department is treating this as a missing person case, and no one has been able to reach Lilley. We ask anyone with information that may aid us in locating him to call 808-842-2600."
Engaged in the search are:
- An HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point
- Two MH-65 Dolphin aircrews from Air Station Barbers Point
- The crew of the USCGC Ahi (WPB 87364) from Honolulu
- A 45-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Kauai
- Boatcrews from Kauai Fire
- Jetski operators from Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services
Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Honolulu received a request for assistance from Kauai Fire at 3:40 p.m. They reported locating a green kayak about two miles offshore labeled and determined to belong to Lilley, a local and well-known marine biologist.
Weather in the area is reported as winds at 15 mph, with scattered showers and waves to 5 feet.
