SUBJ: 2018 HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIORS SURVEY (HRBS) FOR ACTIVE DUTY AND RESERVE PERSONNEL
1. The DoD HRBS has been an important source of health behavior information for the
military since 1990. The Coast Guard (CG) is collaborating with the DoD for active duty
and reservist participation in the 2018 HRBS.
2. The HRBS represents a unique opportunity to assess health behaviors that have the
potential to impact readiness.
3. This web-based survey will begin in October 2018 and end in February 2019. CG members
will be randomly selected and notified by letter and email and asked to participate.
4. The RAND Corporation and their survey vendor, Westat, will be conducting the survey.
5. You may receive several e-mail notifications from Westat using the email at:
support@dodhrbs.com. Subject lines include: "INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
2018 DOD HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIORS SURVEY (HRBS) YOUR OPINIONS MATTER!" or
"PLEASE PARTICIPATE IN THE 2018 DOD HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIORS SURVEY (HRBS)."
The survey should take approximately 25 minutes to complete.
6. A critical link in this initiative is unit leadership engagement. It is vital that
commanding officers (CO) and officers-in-charge (OIC) allow members time to complete
the survey. COs and OICs should stress the importance of the survey and encourage
members to participate if they are selected. Members can complete the survey at work
or from home.
7. I am personally committed to the health, safety, and overall well-being of our
members. I ask for your full support in this important research effort. The data
collected will yield invaluable information and insights that will help CG leaders
design and implement health, safety, and work-life programs that can better respond
to the CG’s unique organizational and mission needs.
8. Questions related to this survey can be directed to Mark Mattiko, COMDT (CG-1111) at
