Coast Guard Rescues 3 from capsized vessel near Fire Island

NEW YORK — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescued two people and a dog after their boat capsized off Cedar Beach, New York, Saturday morning.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound received a call on channel-16, the international hailing and distress channel, from a good Samaritan stating a vessel with an adult, child, and dog had capsized near the Fire Island Inlet. 

Sector Long Island Sound command center issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescue boatcrew. 

The rescue crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat arrived on scene at 8:45 a.m. A 47-year-old man, a boy, and dog were pulled from the water and brought aboard. The man and dog were not wearing a life jacket, the child was. 

They were then taken back to Station Fire Island where an EMS crew from West Islip was waiting. 

The rescued individuals were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. Their current conditions are unknown. 

The rescued dog was picked up by the wife of the 47-year-old man. 

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to always wear a life jacket. The number one cause of boating fatalities is drowning, most often by sudden, unexpected entry into the water. Wearing a life jacket increases the chances of surviving a boating accident.
