CHARLESTON, SC. — A ceremony designating Chatham County as an official Coast Guard community is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center in Savannah, Georgia.
During the ceremony, Al Scott, the Chatham County Chairman, will be receiving a designation from Adm. Karl Schultz, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard, designating Chatham County as an official Coast Guard community.
An Air Station Savannah helicopter crew will be conducting a search and rescue demonstration in the Savannah River following the ceremony and additional Coast Guard units will be open for tours. The Coast Guard Cutter Willow is scheduled to offer free public tours Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.at the Savanah City Pier.
Designating an official Coast Guard community requires approval from Congress by the Commandant of the Coast Guard to Chatham County. The designation is predicated on Chatham County’s ability to erect monuments to the Coast Guard, organize civic celebrations and offer special recognition and support Coast Guard morale, welfare, and recreational initiatives. A Coast Guard community’s designation is active for 5 years, at which time it is reevaluated based on the support rendered since designation.
Media interested must RSVP by 3 p.m. Wednesday with Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment Jacksonville at 305-318-1864 or PADETJacksonville@uscg.mil
