Coast Guard to honor first keeper of U.S. Life Saving Station in Louisville, Kentucky

What:  The Coast Guard to honor the first keeper of the U.S. Lifesaving Station in Louisville, Kentucky.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - In upholding the core values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty, the Coast Guard will pay tribute to Capt. William Devan Jr., the first keeper of the U.S. Lifesaving Station #10. He was the keeper from the initial creation of Station #10, served from 1881 to 1911, and earned the Gold Life Saving Medal for his service.

The U.S. Life Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service, which merged into the Coast Guard in 1915, have a rich history of saving mariners in peril while navigating the treacherous Falls of the Ohio.
