SUBJ: NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH
1. “America’s Workforce: Empowering All,” the theme for this year’s observance
of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), acknowledges the value
of an inclusive workforce that utilizes the talents and skills of all employees
and encourages their development and advancement. During this month, and
throughout the year, it is vital for the Coast Guard to ensure that our employment
policies and practices do not exclude or limit the contributions of persons with
disabilities in the workforce.
2. This year marks the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA), landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination in employment and public
services/accommodations and telecommunications for the Nation’s more than 56
million persons with disabilities. The Federal government and many employers
nationwide continually strive to deliver on this commitment to equal rights by
actively recruiting and hiring workers with disabilities. These individuals want
and deserve the same opportunities as persons without disabilities--to pursue a
meaningful career, earn an income, and live independently.
3. The Federal government has made many advances in the elimination of barriers
and the establishment of processes for employing persons with disabilities. A
significant Federal sector resource is the Department of Transportation’s
Disability Resource Center (DRC), at
https://www.transportation.gov/drc/disability-resource-center. DRC provides job
accommodations and related services to DOT employees, the Coast Guard and job
applicants. Additionally, assistive technology and needs assessments are
available through the Department of Defense’s Computer/Electronic Accommodation
Program (CAP), at http://www.cap.mil/.
4. Coast Guard units and commands are encouraged to observe National Disability
Employment Awareness Month and to participate in National Disability Mentoring Day,
an event designed to bring students with disabilities into the workplace where they
can learn first-hand about career opportunities. Disability Mentoring Day
typically is recognized on the third Wednesday of October, however, the date varies
in communities nationwide. Additional information can be found at www.aapd.com.
