Coast Guard rescues 7 from boat taking on water in Biscayne Bay

MIAMI — The Coast Guard rescued seven people aboard a 38-foot boat taking on water in Biscayne Bay, Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders received a report from the Miami-Dade Police Department of the incident at approximately 8:42 p.m. Watchstanders diverted a Coast Guard Station Miami 33-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement crew. They arrived on scene at approximately 9 p.m., dewatered the boat with assistance from Miami-Dade Fire Boat 73, put the vessel in tow and transferred it to Dinner Key Marina at approximately 9:42 p.m. with no reported injuries.

“This case highlights how the partnerships with Miami-Dade Police dispatch as well as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue result in lives being saved," said Cmdr. Jason Aleksak, Coast Guard Sector Miami search and rescue mission coordinator. "The Coast Guard relies on these partners every day to successfully execute our missions and assist boaters in distress.”

Commercial salvage has been contracted to salvage the vessel.
