NEW YORK – The Buckeye Terminal is now fully operational with the opening of the south dock Thursday afternoon following a diesel oil spill that occurred Sept. 6.
The Unified Command that was established in response to the oil spill is now stood down as the Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation.
The unified command was established Friday in response to a diesel spill at the Buckeye Terminal. Agencies within the unified command were:
- U.S. Coast Guard
- Environmental Protection Agency
- Buckeye Terminal
- New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
- New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
As of Thursday morning, an estimated 56,000 gallons of oily product has been recovered during clean-up operations.
Clean up response operations included skimming, vac-trucks, and use of absorbent material to remove the diesel from the waterway. Approximately 6,500 feet of boom was deployed to protect sensitive sites and contain the diesel.
The Coast Guard will continue to work with NJ/NY State agencies and the EPA to monitor the cleanup.
During the response there were no reports of injuries or impacted wildlife.
The cause of the spill is under investigation.
