Unified Command established for diesel spill near Port Reading, N.J.

NEW YORK — A Unified Command has been established in response to a diesel fuel spill that occurred at the Buckeye Terminal in the Arthur Kill Waterway near Port Reading, New Jersey, Thursday night.

 

Agencies represented in the Unified Command are the U.S. Coast Guard, Buckeye Terminal, New Jersey Department of Environment Protection, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

 

Members from the responding agencies are on scene and will mitigate the situation throughout the weekend. An oil spill removal organization continues to clean up the spill and are using containment boom in the affected area.

 

There are reports of sheening at local facilities. The Unified Command asks that the public stay away from the area. To report a potential sheen please call the Buckeye Emergency Number at 1-800-331-4115.

 

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
