71-year-old medically evacuated by Coast Guard helo crew near Yaquina Bay, Oregon

WARRENTON, Ore. -- A Coast Guard aircrew medically evacuated a female reportedly suffering from a head injury while aboard the cruise ship Grand Princess near Yaquina Bay, Sunday morning.

A Coast Guard Air Facility Newport aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter hoisted the individual and transported her to awaiting Emergency Medical Service personnel in Newport.

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River Command Center watchstanders initially received the request for assistance from cruise ship personnel at 5 a.m.

The cruise ship began transiting toward Yaquina Bay, so Coast Guard Sector North Bend Command Center watchstanders took over control as the Search and Rescue Mission Coordinators.

The North Bend personnel dispatched the helicopter crew to meet the cruise ship, which was approximately 35 nautical miles off of Yaquina Bay when the medevac occurred.

At 7:15 a.m., the helicopter crew transported the injured woman to the EMS personnel on shore.

The woman’s condition is unknown at this time.
