Coast Guard, good Samaritan rescue 2 in sinking vessel near Key West

MIAMI — The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan assisted five boaters Friday after their boat began taking on water approximately 44 miles north of Key West.

Coast Guard Sector Key West Command Center watchstanders received a call from a good Samaritan at approximately 9:20 a.m., stating that a motor vessel with five people aboard were taking on water and in need of Coast Guard assistance.

Sector Key West watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Key West 45-foot Response Boat crew and diverted a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew to the scene.

The good Samaritan arrived on scene and embarked two of the five people aboard. The aircrew arrived on scene, lowered a dewatering pump and the other three people were able to successfully dewater the vessel.

A commercial salvage vessel is schedule to tow the vessel to shore.

No injuries were reported.
