Coast Guard rescues distressed mariner in New York Harbor

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard rescued an 18-year-old man from the East River in New York, Sunday afternoon.
The individual was suffering from severe back pain and a leg laceration after falling off his personal water craft.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday, a boatcrew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-medium noticed a person treading water in the East River near Brooklyn Bridge Park.
A qualified EMT onboard the Coast Guard boat assessed the situation and deployed a stokes litter so the boatcrew could safely bring the man aboard.
Once the patient was onboard, he was quickly transported to awaiting FDNY EMS at North Cove Marina in Manhattan. EMS received the patient around 3:45 p.m. and he was reported to be in stable condition at the time.
“Our boatcrews stand vigilant and are always on the lookout for distressed mariners,” said Capt. Jason Tama, commander Coast Guard Sector New York. “This time was no exemption. We worked quickly and safely to render assistance to the individual and ensure he received the medical treatment he needed.”
