Coast Guard responds to vessel taking on water near Seal Beach

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — Coast Guard and Orange County Sheriff's Department crews responded to a vessel taking on water near Seal Beach, Saturday evening.

At approximately 10 p.m., an employee on an oil platform contacted Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders about an 18-foot recreational vessel taking on water with three men aboard. The employee on the oil platform also threw life jackets to the three men.

At approximately 10:16, a Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach boat crew and an Orange County Sheriff's Department rescue crew arrived on scene. The Coast Guard boat crew embarked two of the men and the sheriff's boat crew embarked the remaining man, dewatered the boat and towed it to Davies Harbor Launch Ramp.

“The prompt notification and action by the employee on the oil platform was vital to this successful interagency rescue," said Cmdr. Lushan Hannah, the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach chief of response. "Good Samaritans have always played a critical role in assisting us with responding to mariners in distress.”

The Coast Guard urges all mariners to always wear life jackets while at sea and to have a VHF radio aboard their vessel to monitor safety broadcasts and to contact authorities in the event of an emergency.

There were no reports of injuries.
