MIAMI -- Capt. Megan Dean, Captain of the Port for Miami, issued Tugboats Miami, Peggy Ann and Jean Ruth certificate of inspection Friday to comply with 46 CFR Subchapter M regulations.

These previously uninspected towing vessels will be the first three vessels in Sector Miami's zone to obtain certification after a decade of preparation to establish safety regulations governing the inspection standards and safety management systems of towing vessels.

These newly inspected vessels will be granted specific routes in which to operate and their safety oversight  will be greatly improved.

"My team and the operators here today have worked tirelessly over the last several years to bring these towing vessels into compliance with the new regulations," said Dean. "This shows their commitment to the safe movement of commerce in Port Miami and the Miami River."

There are approximately 60 towing vessels operating in the Sector Miami area of responsibility that will be affected by the Subchapter M regulations and will increase Coast Guard workload by approximately 16 vessel inspections a year.
