BOSTON — Coast Guard Capt. Christian Glander assumed command of Sector Southeastern New England from Capt. Richard Schultz, during a change-of-command ceremony held Thursday at Station Cape Cod Canal in Sandwich.

Schultz, who assumed the responsibilities of commander of Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in 2016, will continue to serve in his next assignment as part of the First Coast Guard District staff.

"I had the fortunate opportunity over the past four years to work with the very best in the Coast Guard, other government agencies, and maritime communities across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts," said Schultz. "I thank everyone for their dedication, partnership, and hard work supporting our many missions."

Glander is assuming responsibility of over 3,000 square miles of offshore waters and 1,200 miles of coastline of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. This area includes the fishing fleet of New Bedford and numerous high-capacity ferries.

Rear Adm. Andrew Tiongson, Commander, First Coast Guard District presided over the ceremony.

The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored military tradition deeply rooted in Coast Guard history and signifies a complete transfer of authority and responsibility from one individual to another.
