Coast Guard, commercial salvage vessel rescue 2 from capsized vessel near Islamorada

MIAMI — The Coast Guard and a commercial salvage vessel rescued two people from a capsized 24-foot  pleasure craft Saturday near Whale Harbor near Islamorada.

A Coast Guard Station Islamorada watchstander received a call from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 11:17 a.m. stating two people were in the water after a 24-foot center console pleasure craft had capsized near Whale Harbor. The watchstander directed the launch of a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement boatcrew, which arrived on scene at 11:43 a.m. and pulled two people, with life jackets on, out of the water.

"When we first arrived on scene one person was standing on the capsized vessel and another was clinging to a water jug, but both were wearing life jackets," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Taylor Shortes, a Station Islamorada coxswain. "My crew quickly tossed a heaving line to the people so we could get them to safety." 

The SPC—LE boatcrew transferred the people to a commercial salvage vessel with no reported injuries.
