Coast Guard rescues 3 people from Fishers Island Sound

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three mariners drifting in Fishers Island Sound after their vessel got caught in a lobster trap and capsized Friday morning.    

At 7:50 a.m., Sector Long Island Sound watchstanders received a report of a 20-foot capsized pleasure craft with three people clinging to the hull on the north side of Fisher's Island. 

 

Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched Coast Guard Station New London. Stonington and Watch Hill Police Departments launched Marine assets as well.

 

The Coast Guard rescue boat arrived on scene, located the three people in the water and safely brought them aboard the Coast Guard boat.

 

Sector Long Island Sound command center will broadcast a marine safety information broadcast for the capsized vessel in the area of Wicopesset buoy 7 and oversee salvage operations for the vessel.

 

No pollution has been reported in the area.
