ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard Cutter Resolute conducted a change of command ceremony Wednesday in St. Petersburg.

Vice Adm. Scott A. Buschman, the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander, presided over the ceremony where Cmdr. Carmen S. DeGeorge transferred command of the Resolute to Cmdr. Roy R. Brubaker.

The event, though not specifically prescribed by Coast Guard regulations, was part of a heritage of seafaring customs. Parading crew attendance and a public reading of the official orders stemmed from when movement of mail and persons was a slow process. This procedure was designated to ensure that only authorized officers held command and that all were aware of the transfer of authority.

DeGeorge was in command of the 210-foot Reliance-class cutter since June 2016 overseeing a crew of 82. During the latest patrol, under his command, the Resolute crew interdicted and offloaded 2,600 pounds of marijuana valued more than $14 million, and repatriated 50 Haitian migrants.

Medium endurance cutters like the Resolute are built for multi-week offshore patrols, including helicopter and pursuit boat operations which provide a key capability for homeland security operations at sea.

Brubaker is a Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, native with 18 years of sea service experience. He has been involved in a wide variety of missions across the country, including aids to navigation, search and rescue, migrant and drug interdictions, and fisheries enforcement.
