Coast Guard conducts 2 medical evacuations off Maui

HONOLULU — Coast Guard crews on Maui evacuated two people with medical concerns in separate cases near Molokini Crater, Tuesday.

Coast Guard Station Maui 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crews responded in each case and transported the ailing visitors to awaiting emergency medical personnel in Maalaea Harbor and Kihei Marina respectively.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a call for assistance from the master of the passenger vessel Four Winds II at 9:38 a.m. reporting a 50-year-old woman suffering from a severe jellyfish sting while snorkeling off Molokini Crater. Local paramedics were consulted and recommended the medical evacuation. The RB-M crew responded with the paramedic aboard and safely transported the woman and her family to Maalaea Habor. She did not require additional care upon arrival.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a call from the master of the passenger vessel Pride of Maui at 10:35 a.m. reporting a 64-year-old woman suffering from severe disorientation in the vicinity of Molokini Crater. The duty flight surgeon was consulted and recommended a medical evacuation. The RB-M crew responded and safely transported the passenger and her teenage child to Kihei Marina.

"Our crews remain ready to respond and get those who require a higher level of medical care to those resources as quickly as possible," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Busch, the acting officer of the day at Coast Guard Station Maui.
