Coast Guard, partner agencies rescue three boaters near Point Pinos

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL Fire) rescued three boaters after their 19-foot vessel became disabled near Point Pinos, Saturday.

The stranded boaters contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders at approximately 11:30 a.m., reporting that their vessel had become disabled, but they did not believe themselves to be in immediate distress.

A Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew and Vessel Assist arrived on scene to discuss options with the stranded boaters when the disabled boat began to drift closer to shore, requiring immediate rescue actions.

A Coast Guard Station Monterey 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew arrived on scene and transferred one of the boaters aboard, but due to the decreasing depth of water, could not transfer the remaining two boaters. CAL Fire deployed two personal watercraft from shore and transferred the remaining two boaters from the disabled vessel.

The disabled vessel beached nearby and the owner is making plans for salvage. There were no reported injuries and no pollution threat.

"The California coast can be a dynamic and sometimes dangerous place to boat," said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Berger, Sector San Francisco's search and rescue mission coordinator. "We rely on the capabilities and teamwork of our partner agencies on local, state and federal levels to respond quickly and effectively to keep people safe who venture onto the water."

The Coast Guard urges mariners to always wear a life jacket, carry a marine-band VHF radio and check the weather before heading out on the water.
