Media Availability: Coast Guard to set historic Francis Scott Key buoy in Patapsco River

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin is scheduled to set the historic Francis Scott Key buoy on Friday in the Patapsco River near the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

WHO: Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin, National Park Service, Coast Guard Choir

WHAT: The crew of the James Rankin will place the buoy in the Patapsco River where the ship carrying Key was anchored in 1814, as Fort McHenry was bombarded. The National Park Service will provide historic context and the Coast Guard Headquarters Choir will sing the National Anthem.

WHEN: Friday, June 8, 2018 at 10 a.m. (Please arrive by 9:30 a.m.)

The buoy marks the spot where the ship carrying Francis Scott Key, the author of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” was anchored during the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Each year the buoy is set in the spring, to mark the historic location of the event, and it is removed in the fall.
