SUBJ:  2018 EXCEPTIONAL SEXUAL ASSAULT RESPONSE COORDINATOR (SARC) OF THE YEAR AWARDEE
1. The Department of Defense Exceptional SARC of the Year Award is presented each April
to an individual (military or civilian) from each military service, which includes the
Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, and National Guard Bureau. This program
recognizes individuals whose work in the field of sexual assault prevention and response
has been particularly noteworthy and demonstrates outstanding service in support of our
service members.
2. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Eric Barreras, Regional SARC, District 11 (Alameda),
has been selected as the 2018 Exceptional SARC of the Year for the Coast Guard.
Mr. Barreras demonstrated exceptional drive as the SARC in District 11 for over 6,700
Coast Guard personnel operating across 12 major commands, 10 separate duty stations and
three geographic regions. In addition to providing direct support to victims of sexual
assault, Mr. Barreras, realizing the need for victims to have a safe and calming
atmosphere during their interview process, took the initiative to repurpose an
under-utilized office space. The area was transformed into a room where victims could
feel safe. Mr. Barreras also hosted the first-ever Appreciation Breakfast for his
Victim Advocates to focus on their significant work and dedication in supporting Coast
Guard personnel. Mr. Barreras’ initiative was also proven by assisting other Coast Guard
SARCs with cases that required a joint approach to ensure victims received the best care
possible. Mr. Barreras’ creativity, professionalism, and dedication to District 11, the
SAPR Program, and the Coast Guard is commendable.
