Coast Guard, others search for man in Delaware River

 

 

PHILADELPHIA—The Coast Guard and others are searching for a man in the Delaware River near Hawk Island, New Jersey, Monday.

Watchstanders in the Sector Delaware Bay Command Center in Philadelphia received initial notification at about 5:40 p.m. that several people in the water required assistance in the vicinity of Buoy 22 near Hawk Island. 

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a response boat crew from Station Philadelphia. The Coast Guard arrived on scene and learned that five people aboard a 16-foot recreational vessel ended up in the water after the boat hit a wake. Four of the people had been recovered by first responders by the time the Coast Guard arrived on scene. All four were placed in the care of EMS and taken to area hospitals. The fifth person, a male in his 20s, is still missing.

The Coast Guard is searching along with crews from the the Philadelphia Marine Police, New Jersey State Police, Philadelphia Fire Marine and other local agencies.

"We are working diligently along with our partners, doing everything we can to locate this man," said Chief Petty Officer Kyle Gerkens, command duty officer for Sector Delaware Bay.
