Coast Guard issues notice of limited VHF coverage in Prince William Sound, Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska --The Coast Guard has issued an ongoing Broadcast Notice to Mariners that there is currently no VHF-FM coverage in the vicinity of Whittier and Passage Canal in Prince William Sound.
Vessels departing Whittier will transit through an area of no coverage before they have the ability to contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16.
The Coast Guard does not have a channel 16 distress listening watch in the following areas:
Northwestern Prince William Sound;
Port Wells;
Whittier;
Northern Culross Passage;
Passage Canal.
“We want to make mariners aware the Coast Guard is currently unable to hear VHF transmissions until vessels reach Port Wells in Prince William Sound,” said Chief Petty Officer Dave Bergman, communications systems manager for Coast Guard Sector Anchorage. “We request mariners relay distress calls to the nearest Coast Guard unit, or call the Sector Anchorage command center at 907-428-4100.”
